India stole both of our hearts, inspired us to change how we lived our lives and to carve out our vision of a small ethical fashion business into a reality. We’ve been touched by the spirit of the country, the presence of daily ritual and devotion has moved us and we are forever in awe of the diverse landscapes and rich traditions. The essence of FARA is held in our very own adventures here.
We had been travelling India at similar times when we met in Goa, a time when Rachel had also reconnected with two women in Delhi who she had previously worked with. Suddenly we had this triangle that made sense. Between us we found the balance of Fumie’s wild creativity and Rachel’s streamlined business approach and, with Meera and Manisha in Delhi, we could explore how to adapt and work within their systems.
FARA started in Goa with a stall at the night market and, as our vision refined itself, we found our home here which has also allowed us to create a life that supports our vision and is authentic to our values. We work with local women on the ground and are able to source fabrics and dyes and work closely with artisans in Rajasthan and Varanasi. By choosing to base ourselves here, to export from here, we support the country directly and continue to grow and nourish our relationship with the people and the land.
